Westphalian evening anyone? The Kuhviertel is calling. This district in Muenster is steeped in tradition. It offers a living mix of student pubs and cozy Westphalian restaurants. The Kuhviertel is located in the heart of Muenster in the district Mitte. It extends around streets like Juedefelderstrasse, Kuhstrasse and Hollenbeckerstrasse.
The Kuhviertel has a special character since the end of the 19th century. Marginalized population groups moved here. Roma and Jenische “travelers” arrived. They worked as knife grinders and basket makers under difficult conditions. They sold their wares in the summer. There were also Jewish families.
The Kuhviertel had a reputation as a “gangster district”. Residents were stigmatized as “anti-social”. The Kuhviertel was one of four districts where Masematte was spoken. Masematte is a secret language. People with low social status lived here.
War damage ended the historic buildings of the Kuhviertel. There was no reconstruction.
Today the Kuhviertel is a small-scale residential area. It features specialty shops and pubs. These include the “Cavete”. It is Muenster’s oldest student pub. Also notable are the Pinkus-Müller brewery and the Wilbois action house.
During the day the Kuhviertel invites you to stroll. Alleys and small shops await. Owner-operated businesses and restaurants invite exploration. The narrow streets tell stories of the past. The Kuhviertel connects old and new Muenster.
Why not visit the dark beer brewery Pinkus Müller? Sit under ancient beams. Read aphorisms at long wooden tables. Generations of guests have immortalized themselves here.
