Picture the grandeur of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This magnificent red brick structure stands proudly in Hell’s Kitchen. It’s one of the largest churches in Midtown Manhattan a testament to faith and community.

Founded in 1876 by Reverend Martin J Brophy the parish initially met in the Plymouth Baptist Church. The growing congregation quickly outgrew their temporary home. Father Brophy a visionary leader immediately started fundraising. He secured land and commissioned the architectural firm of Napoleon LeBrun & Sons.

The cornerstone of the current Victorian Romanesque church was laid in 1884. The completed church was dedicated in 1885 by Archbishop Michael A Corrigan. The AIA Guide to NYC describes its beauty its “symmetric confection of deep red brick”. Matching terracotta is frosted with light-colored stone.

The church served a largely Irish and German congregation. Its size and influence were significant. This led to an interesting incident in 1894. Newspapers reported priests used the pulpit to sway voters. Vicar-General Mooney cleverly avoided celebrating mass on Election Day. Other priests however openly endorsed the Democratic ticket.

The interior underwent a major reconfiguration in 1966. This was after the Second Vatican Council. This modernization sadly altered the original Victorian design.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus remains a vital part of its community. It’s a landmark a symbol of enduring faith. It’s a story etched in brick and stone in the heart of Manhattan. A place of worship that continues to serve and inspire. A legacy of faith community and resilience.
