Charleston’s hidden gem Mount Pleasant boasts a history as rich and layered as its marshlands. Standing before its vibrant heart you are transported to a time long past.

Mount Pleasant wasn’t always the thriving town it is today. Long before European settlers arrived the Sewee people an Algonquian-speaking tribe called this land home. They fished hunted and thrived in the fertile lands. The first English settlers arrived in 1680 under Captain Florentia O’Sullivan. He received a grant of 2340 acres encompassing not only the island later named after him but also the future site of Mount Pleasant. This area was initially called North Point.

The story of Mount Pleasant is one of resilience and transformation. The 1700s saw the rise of large plantations cultivating rice and indigo. Enslaved Africans and African Americans formed the backbone of this agricultural economy. Their labor built the wealth of the area. Their stories though often untold are integral to Mount Pleasant’s identity. Scanlonville a significant post-Civil War African American community emerged from this history. Freedmen like Robert Scanlon pooled resources to purchase land creating a place of self-determination.

Riverside another neighborhood west of Scanlonville served as one of Charleston County’s five “black beaches” during the Jim Crow era. Segregation dictated separate spaces. Riverside though offered a space for community a haven where African American residents could enjoy leisure and experience performances by musical giants like Duke Ellington and James Brown.

The 19th century saw Mount Pleasant play a pivotal role in the Civil War. Battery Guerry and its floating counterpart defended Charleston. They were also used for attacks on Fort Sumter. Mount Pleasant also secretly trained the crew of the Confederate submarine H L Hunley. This small vessel launched from Breach Inlet played a crucial role in naval warfare.

The 20th century brought significant changes. The construction of bridges linked Mount Pleasant to Charleston transforming its seasonal population into a year-round community. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 dealt a blow. Yet Mount Pleasant’s growth spurt following the storm was unprecedented. The population skyrocketed.
