Did Huo Shilian envision this bustling scene when he built his mansion? Today, we stand before the Huo Shilian Mansion, or Huo Shilian Gongguan, on Jiefang North Road. It’s a testament to a man who rose from humble beginnings to become a financial titan in 1930s Guangzhou. Huo Shilian helped his father with his business in his early years. By 1931, he controlled Guangzhou’s entire tobacco industry, thanks to Chen Jitang. He secured the monopoly on lottery tickets within the province. He expanded his empire, establishing banking companies throughout Guangdong province, participating in local banknote bidding. Huo Shilian’s mansion, built during the Republican era, reflects his success. The east-west facing building blends brick and concrete, showcasing the Art Deco architectural style. The external walls boast polished granite tiles. Decorative patterns like swirling grass adorn the areas below the windows. The main building stands four and a half stories tall, contrasting with the two-story back building. Large rectangular steel windows dominate the front facade, the walls between them forming pillar-like structures. A prominent entrance, supporting a second-floor balcony, graces the center of the first floor. A fourth-floor balcony protrudes from the middle. Two grand granite steps lead to the main door. Inside, the first floor features a mix of patterned tile, granite, and polished stone flooring. A wooden door separates the hallway from the main rooms. Passageways connect the front and back buildings. A staircase in the northern section ascends to the second floor. The back building features a wood-framed glass exterior with a three-story atrium at its center. A gallery-style walkway encircles the second floor. The Huo Shilian Mansion isn’t just an architectural marvel. It’s a symbol of ambition and a glimpse into Guangzhou’s vibrant past.
