Perhaps, students envision their future legal careers right here at the Faculty of Law. Since 1972, the Faculty of Law at Universiti Malaya has delivered comprehensive legal education. It is a scholarly discipline. The faculty equips students with professional skills. They also learn the ethics of the legal profession. Students develop a critical outlook on the law. The law becomes an element for social organization. It is also an instrument for social change and justice.

The Faculty of Law offers several degrees. These include the Bachelor of Laws and the Bachelor of Jurisprudence. Postgraduate degrees are also available. One can pursue a Master of Laws or a Doctor of Philosophy. The faculty also provides a Master of Criminal Justice. A Master of Commercial Law degree is also an option.

Research thrives at the Faculty of Law. Three research centers operate here. They are the Centre for Law and Ethics in Science and Technology (CELEST). Another is the Centre for Legal Pluralism and Indigenous Law (CLPIL). The Universiti Malaya Centre for Regulatory Studies (UMCoRS) is also present. CELEST explores legal and ethical implications in science and technology. CLPIL examines legal pluralism and indigenous law. UMCoRS focuses on law’s intersection with business, economy, and innovation. It also studies growth and competition.

Universiti Malaya consistently ranks high for law. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2025, it secured a good position. This ranking reflects the faculty’s dedication. It strives for world-class quality and standards. The Faculty contributes to breakthroughs. It aids civilizational progress.

The hard work of the campus community drives the Faculty of Law’s success. Academic talent contributes significantly. So do the non-academic staff. They meet internally set Key Performance Indicators.

Legal education in Malaysia has roots in the United Kingdom. Local law faculties require pre-university qualifications. Examples include the Malaysian Higher School Certificate and A-Levels. The International Baccalaureate and Foundation Courses are other options. A diploma is also acceptable. Law degree programs generally cover civil law subjects. Some institutions include Sharia or Islamic law courses. These are requirements for admission and graduation.

There are multiple routes to obtain legal qualifications in Malaysia. The first is a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) program. It requires four years of full-time study. Recognized local universities offer this. These include the University of Malaya and the International Islamic University Malaysia.

Another route is the Bachelor of Legal Studies (Hons) program. Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) offers this three-year degree. Graduates can work as legal advisors. They can also become legal executives. However, they are not fully qualified to practice as advocates and solicitors. They can continue with a one-year Bachelor of Laws program at UiTM, if shortlisted. Others may sit for the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) examination.

The Bachelor of Jurisprudence (Hons) from the University of Malaya is another path. It is taught externally at private institutions. It is equivalent to the Bachelor of Legal Studies from UiTM. Graduates need to pass the Certificate in Legal Practice examination to practice law.

Graduates must complete a pupillage period to practice as Advocates and Solicitors. This involves nine months of reading in chambers. After this, they are called to the Bar.

The Malaysian Bar has advocated for a Common Bar Course (CBC). It also supports a Common Bar Examination (CBE). This would create a single entry point. It would serve the legal profession for both local and foreign law graduates. The CBC would be a 20-month course. It would focus on vocational skills. Modules would include Legal Language and Communication Skills. Practice Management Skills would also feature. A Student Law Office program would simulate a legal environment.

So as you stand here at the Faculty of Law, consider its rich history. Imagine the countless legal minds shaped within these walls. Their influence has rippled through Malaysia’s legal landscape.
