On a cold January day in 1956, a gruesome discovery was made on East Kilbride golf course. The battered body of 17-year-old Anne Kneilands lay near the fifth tee. This marked the beginning of a reign of terror by serial killer Peter Manuel. Anne Kneilands Cairn Memorial stands as a somber reminder of her tragic fate. Anne, a machinist from High Blantyre, had been on her way to a date. She had planned to meet a man she’d met at a dance. When he didn’t show, she visited friends at Capelrig Farm before heading to the bus stop. That was the last time anyone saw her alive. The police investigation quickly focused on Manuel, a local man with a history of violence. He was working on a construction project near the golf course at the time of the murder. He even had fresh scratches on his face. Despite suspicion and questioning, Manuel’s father provided an alibi. He remained free to continue his killing spree. Anne’s murder was a brutal act. Her skull was fractured, and her belongings scattered across the golf course. Evidence suggested a desperate attempt to escape. She lost a shoe in the mud, ran into a barbed wire fence, and finally was caught and killed. Anne Kneilands Cairn Memorial serves not only as a memorial to a young life tragically cut short. It also stands as a stark reminder of the fear that gripped the community during Manuel’s reign of terror. Although initially cleared of Anne’s murder, Manuel eventually confessed to her killing and several others when finally apprehended in 1958. He was hanged for his crimes, bringing an end to his horrific spree.
