Closed since 2017 the Baerwaldbad stands before us. A relic of Berlin’s past it whispers tales of community and change. This isn’t just a swimming pool. It’s a monument. Designed by Ludwig Hoffmann the Baerwaldbad opened in 1901. It was a beacon of hope in a city grappling with overcrowding and poor hygiene.

The Baerwaldbad was more than just a place to swim. It was a social hub. It offered not only swimming pools and showers but also medical services. Staff even lived on the upper floors. A clever design ensured direct access for students from the neighboring school. Imagine the happy splashing of children learning to swim.

Initially a small U-shaped pool. The Baerwaldbad was expanded in 1913-1917. This added a larger pool. But sadly the expansion was destroyed during World War II. The resilience of the community shone through though. The second pool was rebuilt in 1955 using original plans. The Baerwaldbad became a beloved place again. Many Kreuzberg residents learned to swim within its walls.

The Baerwaldbad’s story is one of constant adaptation. Declining popularity led to closures in the 1990s. Yet the local swimming clubs stepped in. They formed the TSB e V. They took over leasing and running the facility. They reopened it in 2002. The Baerwaldbad even hosted an underwater opera AquAria. Imagine the magical sounds echoing in this unique setting. This unique performance showcased the Baerwaldbad’s adaptability.

Despite its revival it eventually closed in 2017. The costs of renovation were enormous. A 2020 assessment stated 41.1 million euros were needed. The building’s unique architecture and historical significance remain. The Baerwaldbad was awarded the European Union’s Cultural Heritage Prize in 2010.

Today the Baerwaldbad stands silent. A testament to Berlin’s history its future hangs in the balance. A feasibility study is underway. The hope is to restore at least one of the pools. But the Baerwaldbad is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of community perseverance and the enduring power of shared history. The Baerwaldbad may be closed but its story continues. It waits patiently for its next chapter to begin.
