Picture this. You stand before Harrison Island. A small islet a mere stone’s throw from the mainland. It’s not much to look at really just a small patch of land jutting into Long Island Sound. But its history is richer than you might imagine.

Harrison isn’t just an island it’s a piece of New York’s vibrant past. Its story begins long before European settlers arrived. Native American tribes the Siwanoy and the Mohegan among them once called this area home. They lived off the land and the water. Their lives were deeply entwined with the rhythms of nature. They were the original inhabitants of this land. Their story however is largely lost to time.

The arrival of European colonists in the late 17th century marked a turning point. John Harrison played a significant role. He and three others negotiated with local Native Americans. They purchased a large area of land this very land we stand on today. Legend says Harrison raced his horse around the area in 24 hours. This tale is more folklore than fact. The land had been previously sold. Disputes with the settlers of Rye ensued lasting nearly 40 years. The English King eventually forced Rye to rejoin the Colony of New York.

The area gradually developed. Farming and dairy production thrived. Harrison became an important agricultural center. The arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century sparked dramatic change. It opened up Harrison to the outside world. This led to growth. Development occurred at a brisk pace.

Today Harrison is a thriving town. It has beautiful residential neighborhoods and excellent schools. The Platinum Mile a string of corporate office parks speaks to its economic success. This area has seen many changes over the centuries. Yet the spirit of Harrison persists.

The island itself remains. A quiet reminder of the past. It’s a beautiful place to sit and reflect. Think about the rich tapestry of history woven here.

Let’s leave Harrison Island. We’ll move on to the next location on our tour. But remember this. Every place has a story waiting to be discovered.
