Ten-inch guns once roared here. Can you hear their echoes? This is Battery Thomson.

Battery Thomson stands proudly on Sullivan’s Island. It’s a vital part of Charleston’s history. Built between 1906 and 1909 this concrete battery was part of a larger coastal defense system. It protected Charleston Harbor from attack. The battery stretches 326 feet long and 84 feet wide. Its ocean side is about 10 feet high.

Two massive ten-inch guns were housed within Battery Thomson. They were powerful weapons designed to stop enemy ships. Imagine the force. The thunder. The sight of those enormous guns pointed seaward. They stood ready to defend Charleston. Until 1947 that is when the battery was decommissioned. All the guns and machinery were removed.

The construction of Battery Thomson followed recommendations. They came from the Endicott Board. This board advised on coastal defenses during the Cleveland administration. The battery’s design is similar to Battery Jasper. Both are examples of impressive concrete coastal fortifications.

Battery Thomson and its neighbor Battery Gadsden worked together. They provided a strong defensive line at the harbor’s mouth. Together they formed a formidable barrier against any potential invaders. The smooth slightly sloping glacis protected the armament complex. It served as a shield against enemy fire.

Today Battery Thomson is a National Register of Historic Places site. It’s a testament to a significant chapter in Charleston’s past. It reminds us of the dedication and ingenuity used to safeguard this important port city. It is a silent sentinel watching over the waves. A monument to a bygone era of coastal defense. It stands as a reminder of a time when the defense of Charleston was of utmost importance.

Take a moment to appreciate Battery Thomson. Visualize the soldiers. Imagine the sounds and smells of this mighty fortification. It has a story to tell. A story of bravery. Of innovation. And of the unwavering defense of Charleston Harbor.
