Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Montreal’s cultural landscape, Église St-Nicholas Antiochian stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Église St-Nicholas Antiochian whispers tales of a community that took root in the 1880s. Syrian and Lebanese immigrants, seeking a new home, settled in Old Montreal. They carried with them the traditions and beliefs of their ancestors, yearning for a place to worship. St. Raphael of Brooklyn, a pivotal figure in Orthodox Christianity, recognized their need. He guided the burgeoning community. In 1896, he blessed the founding of the Syrian Orthodox Benevolent Society, laying the groundwork for Église St-Nicholas Antiochian. Although initially lacking a dedicated building, the faithful gathered in homes. Visiting priests from the Middle East nourished their spiritual hunger. The year 1899 marked a turning point. St. Raphael officially established St. Nicholas Church. The community finally had a spiritual anchor. The first physical structure of Église St-Nicholas Antiochian arose in 1910 at 454 Notre Dame Street East, in the heart of their community. The cornerstone, blessed by Bishop Raphael himself, symbolized the realization of their dreams. The journey of Église St-Nicholas Antiochian continued. In 1949, the community relocated to 80 de Castelnau. A new church was built, a beacon of faith in their evolving neighborhood. This present-day location was consecrated in 1951 by Metropolitans Antony Bashir and Samuel David. The church’s name officially became Église St-Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in 1970. The legacy of St. Raphael of Brooklyn, the first Orthodox Bishop consecrated on North American soil, remains deeply intertwined with Église St-Nicholas Antiochian. He established the church as his second mission, after the St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral in Brooklyn. This makes Église St-Nicholas Antiochian the second oldest parish in the Archdiocese. Canonized in 2000, St. Raphael is now the intercessor for the Antiochian Archdiocese. A piece of his holy relic, embedded in an icon, is venerated within the church walls. Église St-Nicholas Antiochian has thrived under the guidance of dedicated pastors. Fr. Michael Zarbatany, known as the “Apostle to Canada,” served the longest tenure, leading the parish for 40 years. He shepherded the community through its relocation to de Castelnau. His influence extended throughout Quebec and Ontario, leaving an indelible mark on the Orthodox community. Today, Église St-Nicholas Antiochian serves a diverse congregation. Families with roots in Canada and the Middle East come together. English and Arabic intertwine in the services, reflecting the rich cultural heritage. The church stands not only as a place of worship but as a symbol of continuity and adaptation in a dynamic city.
