“A hospital with a history!” That’s what they say about Hindu Rao Hospital. Hindu Rao Hospital stands here today as North Delhi’s largest hospital. It serves all sections of society. But did you know its story began long before it became a modern medical center?
Hindu Rao Hospital sits atop a green hill. This hill is part of the Arravali Mountain Range. The location is quite strategic. Hindu Rao Hospital started very small. In 1911, it was a 16-bed nursing home. Sir Edward Cole Brook, a British Resident, built it as a private house. It was meant for recuperation.
Later, in 1951, the Delhi State Government changed it. The nursing home became a general hospital. It offered basic services and had 127 beds. In 1958, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi took control. By 1963, the Indian government called it a referral hospital.
But let’s rewind even further. The land where Hindu Rao Hospital now stands has seen centuries pass. Timur the Lame, a historical figure, camped here in 1398. He also looted Delhi. The elevation and green cover made it a good vantage point.
The building itself has an interesting past. Some say William Fraser built it in the early 19th century. Fraser lived here. After his death in 1835, Hindu Rao acquired the house. Hindu Rao was a Maratha nobleman. He was also the brother-in-law of Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia of Gwalior. The name “Hindu Rao” has stuck ever since.
During the Revolt of 1857, the house became the British headquarters. Its high position offered a tactical advantage. Hindu Rao himself was friendly with the British. Emily Eden, sister of the Governor-General, mentioned him. She said he was a constant attendant of the Governor-General.
An Ashokan pillar also stands near Hindu Rao Hospital. Feruz Shah moved it to Delhi. It was damaged in an explosion but later restored. This pillar adds another layer to the area’s rich history.
In 2013, a new medical college started at Hindu Rao Hospital. It is named North Delhi Municipal Corporation Medical College. Hindu Rao Hospital continues to evolve. It balances modern care with its historical roots. The hospital tries to promote health in the community. It also supports its employees.
So, as you stand here at Hindu Rao Hospital remember its journey. From a small nursing home to a major hospital. From a nobleman’s house to a site of historical importance. Hindu Rao Hospital is more than just a place of healing. It’s a landmark with stories etched into its very foundation.
