In 1947, amidst the post-war reconstruction, Yao City established Yao Municipal Yao Junior High School. This institution, later renamed Yao City Yao Junior High School, became a beacon of education in the community. Standing here, before Yao City Yao Junior High School, imagine the generations of students who have walked these halls. The school motto, “For everyone, everyone for others,” reflects a commitment to community and mutual support. In 1953, the school absorbed the former Sonishi Village Junior High, consolidating its role in local education. A darker chapter unfolded in 1961 with the Yao Junior High School incident. A large-scale, in-school violence incident occurred, stemming from discriminatory practices against underachieving students. However, the incident, fueled by the Buraku Liberation League, led to demands for educational reform and sparked a movement against discriminatory education. Yao City Yao Junior High School also offers a night school program, providing educational opportunities for those who may not have had access during their youth. This program caters to a diverse student body, both Japanese and foreign-born. It fosters cross-cultural understanding and celebrates diverse traditions. Yao City Yao Junior High School stands as a testament to the power of education to bridge cultural divides and create a more inclusive community. It continues to serve its students, guided by its motto and a commitment to creating a brighter future.
