“Fancy a tee time amidst ancient monuments?” Picture this the Delhi Golf Club, more specifically, the Lodhi Course. It is not just a golf course. It is a historical journey.
The Delhi Golf Club boasts a rich past. Originally, this area belonged to the Mughals and was known as Babarpur. The Delhi Golf Club started as a municipal course in the early 1930s. It officially became a corporate entity on February 24, 1950.
Imagine playing golf surrounded by tombs and historical ruins. The Delhi Golf Club is a unique blend of sport and history. The Lodhi Course specifically offers this uncommon experience.
The Lodhi Course’s history dates back to the 1930s. Back then it was known as the Lodhi Golf Club. A golfing Scotsman, who headed the Horticultural Department, designed it. He hoped golfers would unearth archaeological finds. In 1951, it became the Delhi Golf Club with the help of Indian civil servants. They convinced Prime Minister Nehru to lease the land to the club for a low rent.
Over the years, the Delhi Golf Club evolved. It became a favorite spot for senior civil servants and business elite. Peter Thomson redesigned the course in 1976-77. This led to the 18-hole championship Lodhi Course. In 2019, Gary Player Design firm enhanced the Lodhi Course. They made it more challenging.
The Lodhi Course is a par-72 course. From the black tees, it measures 6912 yards. It features 14 lakes and 88 bunkers. Ancient monuments dot the landscape adding to its charm.
One interesting story involves the 1968 Indian Open. Stan Peach, an Australian golfer, led by six strokes. His ball hit a tomb on the 7th hole. His luck changed. He lost his lead to Kenji Hosoishi of Japan. Peach blamed the tomb’s spirits.
The Delhi Golf Club is not just the Lodhi Course. There are budget-friendly options like the Qutab Golf Course. There are exclusive clubs like the DLF Golf and Country Club. Some courses feature designs by top architects like Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer.
Many Delhi NCR golf clubs are well-maintained. They have clubhouses, pro shops and golf coaching. Some even offer luxury hotels and restaurants.
So, as you tee off at the Delhi Golf Club, remember you are part of a continuing story. It blends sport, history and maybe a touch of ghostly interference.
