Have you ever imagined a village shaped like a triangle? Welcome to Kaulsdorf a unique locality in Berlin. Kaulsdorf’s story begins long before 1347. Archaeological evidence suggests a Slavic settlement existed here. This settlement was restructured during the German Ostsiedlung. Around 1250 the Dorfkirche Kaulsdorf was built. This church stands as a testament to Kaulsdorf’s enduring spirit.

The village grew around this church forming a distinctive triangular shape. This is quite unusual for a traditional Angerdorf. The Thirty Years’ War brought devastation. In 1638 all the farms were destroyed. They remained empty until 1652 when almost all the farms were reoccupied. Franz Carl Achard a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences had an important role in Kaulsdorf’s history. In 1782 he acquired the tax-exempt estate. He used it to experiment with beetroot cultivation and sugar production.

Kaulsdorf’s connection to the Prussian Ostbahn became significant. The railway station opened in 1869. It boosted the village’s growth. The first local council elections were held in 1874. The opening of the Kaulsdorf waterworks in 1916 provided clean drinking water for the residents. This improved living conditions considerably. In 1920 Kaulsdorf became part of Greater Berlin. It was incorporated into the Lichtenberg district. Electrification arrived in March 1920.

Between 1942 and 1945 a temporary hospital was established. This later became the Kaulsdorf hospital. It operated until 1997. It then changed its name to Vivantes Klinikum Hellersdorf before reverting to Vivantes Klinikum Kaulsdorf in 2015. The population grew substantially after 1920. This was due to new housing developments and the renovation of old farmsteads. New housing areas such as those around Hugo-Distler-Strasse and Kaulsdorfer Gärten contributed to this growth.

Kaulsdorf’s cultural identity is tied to its history. You can visit the Dorfkirche its steeple houses a small museum. There’s a Catholic church St Martin with stunning stained glass. The landscape south of Alt-Kaulsdorf is part of the Berliner Balkon nature reserve. The Kaulsdorfer Seen provide recreational areas. The waterworks established in 1916 continues to supply water to 160000 Berlin households. This demonstrates Kaulsdorf’s continuing importance. Its quiet past is marked by the Soviet war memorial. It commemorates the soldiers who fell during the Battle of Berlin.

Today Kaulsdorf is a thriving residential area. It maintains its village charm. Its unique triangular layout the historical buildings the nature reserve and the waterworks are just some of its treasures. Kaulsdorf’s history from Slavic beginnings to its role in Berlin’s water supply is rich and fascinating. It’s a place where history and modern life coexist beautifully.
