Beneath the Lombardy sun sits Comune di Bareggio. It is more than just a municipality. It is a place steeped in history. It offers a glimpse into Italy’s rich past.

Bareggio’s story begins long ago. The Galli Insubri ousted the Liguri from this land around the 6th or 5th century BC. Romans then followed. They built the Via delle Gallie. This road connected the Po Valley to Gaul right through Bareggio.

Later the Longobards ruled. Then came the Franks under Charlemagne. For a long time Bareggio was under the control of the Abbot of the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan.

Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan, changed things in 1385. He placed Bareggio under the authority of Milan’s podestà. This shift linked Bareggio with Corbetta, Cisliano, and Sedriano.

In 1570 San Carlo Borromeo visited Bareggio. A document from 1574 describes the inhabitants’ work. They were farmers, blacksmiths and millers. They were also carpenters and bakers.

The plague of the 16th century left its mark. The Oratorio di San Rocco was built as a reminder. Bareggio then saw many rulers. There were Spaniards, Austrians, and French. Finally, it became part of unified Italy.

Bareggio’s coat of arms tells a story. It shows the area’s economy. Agriculture was key. This is shown by the sheaves of wheat and the poplar tree. A rake also appears which alludes to labor in the fields. Some say it is the staff of Sant’Ambrogio.

The Chiesa parrocchiale dei Santi Nazaro e Celso has a long history. It existed in the 13th century. It was mentioned in Goffredo da Bussero’s Liber Notitiae Sanctorum Mediolanensis. The church was once linked to the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio. This is remembered by the frusta of Sant’Ambrogio in Bareggio’s coat of arms.

The church of Santa Maria alla Brughiera is another notable site. It was built in 1482. Giovanni Crivelli, an abbot, paid for it. The church has a simple square design. It was enlarged around 1700.

Palazzo Visconti di Modrone is now Bareggio’s town hall. Count Melchiorre Gerra ordered its construction in 1647. He had married into the Visconti family. The palace has a grand staircase. It also boasts frescoes.

Bareggio is known for its cherries. They are so important they have their own Denominazione comunale d’origine. Every June the Festa delle Ciliegie takes place.

Even a literary movement called Arcadia took root here in the 17th century. Aristocrats like the Gallina and Visconti families founded it. They met by a clear spring in the countryside.

Bareggio also has a curious tale of a Madonna statue. In 1948 during a procession to Cornaredo, the statue was bombed. Fanatics against the church were responsible. The damaged statue is now in the Santuario della Madonna Pellegrina.

Via Fiume is a unique street. Residents spontaneously organize events. They celebrate with food and music. It is especially lively during Christmas and Easter.

Bareggio today is a blend of old and new. Its history is visible in its buildings. Its culture thrives in its festivals. Its people are proud of their heritage.
