Gazing up at Riochan, one can’t help but feel a surge of playful energy. This whimsical sculpture, created by the renowned artist Taro Okamoto, stands as a vibrant testament to his unique vision. Riochan is located in Toyotsu Park in Suita City, Osaka, a testament to Okamoto’s artistic contributions to the city. Originally crafted in 1983, Riochan served as a signboard for “Carnival Plaza,” a Duskin-owned restaurant. The sculpture, with its sun-like face, quickly captured the hearts of locals, who affectionately nicknamed it “Riochan,” even though Okamoto himself never gave it a formal name. After the restaurant’s closure in 2007, the sculpture found a new home. It was briefly displayed at the Suita City Museum during the “’07 EXPO ’07 My Expo” exhibition, then moved to Shikinzan Park. Finally, in 2011, Riochan was permanently installed in Toyotsu Park, where it continues to delight visitors today. Riochan’s approximately 5-meter frame, a cheerful yellow, features a prominent red nose and a semi-circular red necklace. The sculpture’s large scale and playful design mirror the energy of the sun, a fitting symbol for a place once known for entertainment and now a community park. While the Tower of the Sun remains Okamoto’s most famous work in Osaka, Riochan offers a more intimate encounter with the artist’s whimsical side. It’s a charming reminder of Okamoto’s ability to infuse joy and imagination into public spaces.
