Thirty-nine meters tall. That’s how high the Wasserturm Möller-Wedel reaches into the Hamburg sky. This impressive brick structure isn’t just a water tower. It’s a testament to Wedel’s industrial past and the ingenuity of the Möller family.

Look closely. The Wasserturm Möller-Wedel is more than just a functional water tower. It’s an integral part of the Möller-Wedel company complex. Built in 1943 as an extension to the existing factory it seamlessly blends into the surrounding buildings. Only upon closer inspection does the true nature of the tower reveal itself. The lower levels serve as office space cleverly concealing the water tanks above.

The story of the Wasserturm Möller-Wedel is interwoven with the history of the Möller company itself. It all started with Johann Diedrich Möller an optician who founded the company in 1864. The business expanded rapidly becoming a significant industrial player by the early 20th century. Their optical work required a considerable amount of water prompting the construction of the first water tower in 1912. This innovative approach not only provided the factory’s needs but also supplied water to surrounding homes and even the Wedel train station.

But even this early innovation wasn’t enough. As Wedel grew so did the demand for water. So the company took a novel approach. Instead of building a new water tower they cleverly incorporated one into their new factory building in the 1940s. This clever design integrated the water reservoir into the structure’s upper floors. The old water tower however remained standing well into the 1980s before finally being demolished.

The Wasserturm Möller-Wedel holds a capacity of 300 cubic meters. A network of interconnected rectangular tanks ensures an efficient water supply. Level sensors automatically shut off the inflow once the tanks are full. On the roof an observation platform offers stunning views of Wedel. Recently webcams have been installed to provide breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

The Möller family played a critical role in Wedel’s water supply. They even had a contract with the city in 1929 to provide water. This arrangement continued for decades until 1956 when the city of Wedel took over the task. The Möller company’s waterworks however continued its operations supplying a significant portion of the city’s water until 2016.

Today the Wasserturm Möller-Wedel remains a functional structure a reminder of the industrious spirit and foresight of the Möller family and its impact on Wedel’s development. Standing before it you can almost feel the echoes of history the industriousness of a family and a company that shaped a town.
