Picture the imposing structure before you. This is Nha tho Tan Lac. Its history is a tapestry woven with threads of faith imperial ambition and colonial intervention.
Nha tho Tan Lac also known as Hau Lau is more than just a church. It’s a silent witness to centuries of Hanoi’s history. Built in 1821 by Emperor Minh Mang it originally served as a Daoist temple within the Hanoi Citadel’s imperial residence. The emperor hoped it would bring peace and prosperity. The name Tan Lac itself combines two Chinese characters meaning peace and north.
But the story of Nha tho Tan Lac doesn’t end there. The structure’s function evolved. Initially dedicated to the worship of the Tam Ton three supreme Daoist deities Emperor Thieu Tri later described a different arrangement. He stated the temple held Huyen Thien Chan Vu the Buddha Gia Lam and Ngo Dao Tu. This discrepancy suggests the temple’s deities changed over time.
The French occupation drastically altered Nha tho Tan Lac. They transformed it into a military outpost boarding up doors and windows. Photographs from this period show it repurposed as a defensive structure. Even the name changed to Hau Lau reflecting its position as the rear pavilion behind the main hall. The addition of steel columns bearing the inscription Baudet-Donon & Cie a Paris company further highlights French intervention. This company was established in 1878 suggesting renovations occurred between then and 1921 when the company merged.
The building’s exterior underwent numerous changes. The French added a rear annex a central doorway and a western entrance. They also installed a chimney. These modifications transformed the original structure into a military garrison.
After Vietnam’s independence Nha tho Tan Lac underwent renovations restoring some of its original appearance. Yet the traces of its transformation remain visible. This makes Nha tho Tan Lac a unique blend of architectural styles and a remarkable reminder of Hanoi’s complex past. The building stands today a testament to resilience adaptation and the enduring spirit of the city. The story of Nha tho Tan Lac is a compelling illustration of how one building can reflect centuries of change. Its layers of history are as captivating as the architecture itself. It serves as a powerful reminder that even in stone structures time leaves its mark.
