“Another administrative division?” you might ask. Municipio 5 is more than just a boundary. It’s a vibrant slice of Milanese life.
Municipio 5 officially became an administrative subdivision in the 1980s. Then in 2016, the City Council of Milan reformed it. It became a new administrative body responsible for local services. Think schools, waste collection, parks, and local commerce.
This area stretches southward from Milan’s city center. It is a mix of different social classes and cultures. You’ll find historic central zones and newer peripheral areas.
Municipio 5 includes districts like Chiaravalle and Gratosoglio. Chiaravalle maintains an autonomous town feel, despite being annexed to Milan in 1923. Its isolation is due to the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano and limited public transport. Gratosoglio, on the other hand, started as a commuter town in the 1960s.
Look for the abbey in Chiaravalle. It is a landmark Gothic-Romanesque monastic complex from the 12th century.
Porta Lodovica is another key district. It is considered one of Milan’s most liveable neighborhoods.
The Municipal Council governs Municipio 5. Citizens directly elect the President and 30 members every five years. They manage local services and funds for specific purposes. Natale Carapellese is the current President, elected in 2021.
Education thrives here. Bocconi University, founded in 1902, is a major institution. Ferdinando Bocconi named it after his son. It offers education in economics, finance, law, and more. SDA Bocconi School of Management has earned triple accreditation.
Nature is abundant in Municipio 5. The Parco Agricolo Sud Milano is a significant natural area. Opened in 1990, it preserves the Po Valley’s heritage.
Public parks and gardens dot the landscape. The park covers 47000 ha. It aims to safeguard the natural and historical heritage.
Keep an eye out for the Chiesa Rossa public library and civic center. These are hubs of community activity.
Municipio 5 offers a diverse experience. From historic abbeys to modern universities, it’s a microcosm of Milan. Take a stroll. Discover its hidden corners. You will find something new around every bend.
