Gazing across the landscape, can you envision the bustling canal port that once thrived here? This is Zhangjiawan, a town steeped in history, nestled in Beijing’s Tongzhou District. Zhangjiawan’s story begins during the Yuan Dynasty. An official named Zhang Xuan, tasked with overseeing canal transportation, established a vital port on the Grand Canal. This port, southeast of the then-capital Khanbaliq, became the heart of Zhangjiawan, literally meaning “Zhang Family’s Bay”. Zhangjiawan flourished as a crucial transportation hub. It pulsed with the energy of traders, merchants, and officials. The town even served as a military post, highlighting its strategic importance. Over time, as transportation routes shifted, Zhangjiawan’s prominence faded. The once-bustling port became a quiet village. This transition, however, inadvertently preserved its historical architecture. Today, Zhangjiawan stands as a testament to its rich past. In 2020, this town, with its over 57 villages, housed over 127,000 people. The remnants of the city wall, built in 1564 during the Ming Dynasty, still stand. The Tongyun Bridge, initially a wooden structure, was later rebuilt in stone by imperial decree, showcasing intricate carvings. Both the bridge and the city wall are now recognized as national key cultural relics, a part of the Grand Canal’s Beijing section. Zhangjiawan’s cultural heritage extends beyond the Grand Canal. The Youminguan, a Taoist temple, stands as a prominent landmark. Known locally as the Lier Si Temple, it was a major religious center during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Zhangjiawan Mosque, with its majestic prayer hall and unique architectural details, adds another layer to the town’s diverse cultural tapestry. Zhangjiawan invites you to step back in time. It offers a glimpse into a rich history shaped by the flow of the Grand Canal and the enduring spirit of its people.
