“Holy Desert”. Does that name pique your curiosity? It should. I am talking about Midbar Kodesh Temple.
Midbar Kodesh Temple stands as a vibrant center for Conservative Jews. It is located in the Green Valley area of Henderson Nevada. But its reach extends far beyond. Members come from all over the valley. They come from Anthem MacDonald Ranch Lake Las Vegas and even Summerlin.
Founded in 1995 Midbar Kodesh Temple emerged from Temple Beth Sholom. A group of families decided to start a new temple on the east side of Las Vegas. These families included the Kaminskys Goldmans Rothmans Simons Goldsteins and Feldmans. Early services were held in schools and storefronts. Imagine services held at Truman White and Greenspun Middle Schools. Then picture a storefront across from McCarran Airport.
In 1997 the Greenspun Family donated land for a permanent home. This land was located on Paseo Verde Parkway. While waiting for their new building the congregation moved again. This time it was to 33 Cactus Garden Drive. Finally in 1999 the groundbreaking ceremony took place. In March 2000 members carried the Sifrei Torah by hand. They walked 4.3 miles to their new synagogue Midbar Kodesh Temple.
But Midbar Kodesh Temple is more than just a building. It is a community. It is a place for worship education and socialization. The temple’s records include event photos programs and bulletins. These records span from 1986-1995 and 2005-2017. They offer a glimpse into the temple’s history.
Rabbi Bradley Tecktiel considers Henderson unique. He says you can avoid the vices of Las Vegas here. The Strip is there if you want it. But you can live in Henderson and not even know it exists.
Midbar Kodesh Temple continues to thrive. It provides a welcoming space for all. Whether you are a long-time member or new to the community Midbar Kodesh Temple embraces you.
