“Demolished” is the word echoing through the artistic veins of Beijing. That word hangs heavy in the air as we stand here in Caochangdi. This village, once a haven for creativity, now faces an uncertain future. Yet, Caochangdi’s spirit endures.

Caochangdi, translated as “grasslands,” was once grazing land. Imperial courts used it for hunting. Later, it became an imperial grave and garden site. During the Cultural Revolution, this land transformed into an Agricultural People’s Commune. As China opened its economy, farmers became landlords. They leased land to companies, artists, and galleries. This transformation shaped Caochangdi into the art district we know.

Around 2000, artists began flocking to Caochangdi. This influx drew international attention, similar to the 798 Art Zone. Ai Weiwei, the renowned artist, played a significant role. He helped develop Caochangdi into a thriving arts district. He even designed gallery spaces and living quarters. His studio became a landmark.

But Caochangdi’s journey hasn’t been without struggle. For years, demolition loomed. In 2011, residents and businesses petitioned to save the village. Authorities spared it. However, in July 2018, evictions began. The demolition started. Even Ai Weiwei’s studio faced destruction. Despite this, many buildings slated for demolition still stand as of February 2019. They stand as a testament to the area’s resilience.

Caochangdi became known as the “spiritual promised land for Chinese contemporary art.” Its maze-like layout offered an escape from the city’s bustle. However, navigating Caochangdi could be tricky. Addresses proved useless. A personal connection with the artists often granted access to their homes and studios.

“Caochangdi The Community” launched in 2012. This program hosted art, design, and technology events. Gallery exhibitions, public art installations, and workshops filled the calendar. “Caochangdi The Community” sought to nurture the area’s diverse artistic spirit.

Despite the evictions, some spaces remain. These include artMIA, Beijing Architecture Studio Enterprise and Chambers Fine Art. Galerie Urs Meile, Pèkin Fine Arts, and Taikang Space are also still here. These spaces continue to showcase contemporary art.

Caochangdi is home to notable figures, including Ai Weiwei and Li Songsong. These artists contribute to the area’s artistic identity.

Caochangdi’s future remains uncertain. But its legacy as an artistic hub endures. It serves as a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of art and culture in Beijing. As we leave Caochangdi, remember its story. Remember the artists who shaped it. Remember the challenges it faced. And remember its enduring spirit.
