In 1916, a group of Northville businessmen had a vision. They sought to create a haven for recreation and camaraderie. This vision materialized as Meadowbrook Country Club. Meadowbrook Country Club takes its name from a gentle brook that meanders through the property. The club started with 125 acres of the Fred C. Cochran Farm. Meadowbrook Country Club quickly became a cornerstone of the community. The original six-hole course was designed by the renowned golf architect Willie Park, Jr. These original holes are now numbers 10, 11, 7, 2, 3, and 18. Imagine stepping onto these historic greens, following in the footsteps of golfing legends. Meadowbrook Country Club has hosted some of golf’s most prestigious events. The 1955 PGA Championship was a landmark moment for the club. Doug Ford emerged victorious, defeating Cary Middlecoff. This win was Ford’s first major title. Meadowbrook Country Club also hosted the Motor City Open several times. The 1949 tournament witnessed an epic 11-hole playoff between Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd Mangrum. Darkness eventually halted the duel, resulting in a co-victory. This playoff remains the longest sudden-death playoff in PGA Tour history. Ben Hogan’s 1948 victory at Meadowbrook Country Club cemented the club’s place in golf history. In 1954, Meadowbrook’s own club pro, Chick Harbert, achieved golfing immortality. He won the PGA Championship. This victory led to a unique situation in 1955. Meadowbrook hosted the PGA Championship again instead of the Motor City Open. This is the only instance where a defending major champion hosted the tournament the following year. Today, Meadowbrook Country Club continues to thrive. It has expanded to over 180 acres. It features an 18-hole championship course. The course underwent a major renovation in 2016, the club’s centennial year. Meadowbrook Country Club is more than just a golf course. It’s a place where history, sport, and community intertwine.
