From the rugged slopes of Mount D’Aguilar, a panorama unfolds. The city of Brisbane sprawls below, a tapestry of steel and glass against the shimmering backdrop of Moreton Bay. Mount D’Aguilar stands as a silent sentinel, its peak reaching 750 meters, just shy of the range’s highest point, Tenison Woods Mountain at 770 meters. This very mountain, Mount D’Aguilar, was named after Sir George Charles d’Aguilar by explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1827, forever etching his name into the landscape. The D’Aguilar Range, of which this mountain is a prominent peak, stretches from Caboolture north of Brisbane down through the city’s western edge.

Imagine standing here in the 1840s. The first settlers, farmers and timber-getters, are carving a life from this rugged terrain. The air is thick with the scent of cedar, silky oak, and hoop pine. These giants of the forest fuelled the growth of nearby Dayboro. You might have witnessed teams of loggers, their axes ringing through the valleys. These trees, some of which took centuries to reach such heights, were felled and transported to build the burgeoning city of Brisbane. Even now, remnants of this era remain. Keep an eye out for old stumps, often marked with notches. These are the telltale signs of springboard platforms used by the loggers.

Later, in the 1860s, the lure of gold brought a new wave of fortune-seekers to Mount D’Aguilar. Prospectors chipped away at the quartz-bearing rock, hoping to strike it rich. Although they unearthed some gold, their efforts never yielded the fortune they dreamed of. These abandoned mines are now hidden scars on the landscape, a testament to the boom and bust cycles of history. If you explore the Golden Boulder track at Bellbird Grove, you might even stumble upon some of these old mine shafts, silent echoes of a bygone era.

Mount D’Aguilar isn’t just a mountain. It’s a living testament to time. This protected area is a sanctuary for over 240 bird species and 66 mammal species. From the vibrant calls of the paradise riflebird to the quiet scurry of the red-necked pademelon, Mount D’Aguilar teems with life. Even the elusive platypus calls these creeks and waterholes home. The diversity is truly remarkable. Imagine coming across a giant lace monitor basking in the sun. Or hearing the distinctive laughter of the kookaburra echoing through the trees. This is a place where nature continues to thrive, a precious legacy for generations to come.

As you gaze out from Mount D’Aguilar, remember the layers of history etched into its slopes. From indigenous heritage to the echoes of settlers and miners, this mountain holds stories waiting to be discovered. This natural wonder is more than just a scenic viewpoint. It’s a window into the past, a refuge for the present, and a promise for the future.
