Few know that Grand Beach in Macau, also known as Praia Grande Bay, was once the chief promenade here. It is on the east side of the Macau Peninsula. Imagine it. This bay was the heart of 19th-century Macau.

Once, the governor’s palace stood proudly here at Grand Beach. Administrative offices bustled with activity. Consulates from around the world lined the shore. Leading commercial establishments thrived in this vibrant area.

Grand Beach was bordered by the Fortress of St Francis. It also was bordered by the Fortress of Bomparto. These strongholds guarded the bay. They overlooked the lively promenade.

But time brings change. Today, only a few colonial buildings remain at Grand Beach. Land reclamation has reshaped the landscape. High-rise buildings now dominate the skyline.

Originally named Ou Mun, Grand Beach has seen many transformations. Its most depicted view was in the 19th century. For years, it was Macau’s most characteristic landmark.

Interestingly, Macau’s land has been evolving over decades. Landfill projects have expanded the territory. What was once water is now solid ground. Similar to Singapore’s Sentosa Island, land reclamation shaped Macau.

Macau was a Portuguese colony for about 400 years. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century. Macau became the first European colony in the Far East. Portugal returned Macau to China in 1999. It was the last remaining colony in Asia.

The name Macau itself has an interesting origin. Portuguese seafarers misunderstood the locals. They arrived at A-Ma Temple. Locals told them the temple was devoted to Mazu. Mazu is the goddess of seafarers and fishermen. She was known as “Maa Gok”. The Portuguese then called the area Macau. In Chinese, Macau is Aomen. Aomen means “inlet gates.”

Macau is a tiny place with a high population density. It measures just 28 square kilometers. It has a border of only 3km with mainland China. Approximately 650000 people live here. Macau is one of the most densely populated places in the world.

Today, Macau is often called the “Las Vegas of the East”. But Macau has surpassed Las Vegas in casino revenue. Gambling revenue in Macau was four times higher in 2011. Gambling brought prosperity to this former Portuguese colony.

Despite gambling’s importance, Macau offers more. There are beaches to visit. There are over-the-top hotels and resorts. The Venetian is the largest casino hotel in Asia. Studio City features an eight-shaped Ferris wheel. Macau Tower has the world’s tallest bungee jump.

Consider visiting the Grand Prix Museum. It honors Macau’s racing history. It showcases top-class vehicles. The Macau Grand Prix is a thrilling event. It features demanding circuits. It began as a treasure hunt in 1954.

Grand Beach whispers stories of Macau’s past. From its colonial roots to its modern transformation, it remains a testament to the city’s dynamic spirit. Take a moment to imagine the bustling promenade of old. Let Grand Beach remind you of Macau’s rich history.
