Ready to delve into Gibraltar’s military past? Right before us stands Princess Caroline’s Battery. This artillery battery is located at the northern end of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. It sits at the junction of Willis’s Road and Queen’s Road.

Princess Caroline’s Battery was constructed in 1732. It was named after Princess Caroline. She was the third daughter of King George II. Many people mistakenly call nearby Princess Anne’s Battery, Princess Caroline’s Battery.

Princess Caroline’s Battery saw action during the Great Siege of Gibraltar. The battery needed repairs after that. In 1871, it had a 9-inch rifled muzzle loading gun. The gun had an Elswick Ordnance Company carriage and platform.

In 1905, Princess Caroline’s Battery was updated. A 6-inch Mark VII gun was installed above the magazine. The battery has since been decommissioned. But the original hoists used to arm the gun are still here.

Explosive charges powered the 6-inch gun’s shells. These charges were kept in a room with three small interior windows. Lanterns in the windows lit the chamber. This prevented the dangers of an open flame. Soldiers changed clothes in an adjacent annex to avoid sparks. They even wore special footwear.

Now, let’s step into the Military Heritage Centre. It is located in the underground magazine of Princess Caroline’s Battery. The centre displays relics from the battery. These relics date from the eighteenth century to the present. You’ll see weapons, shells and other artifacts.

The Memorial Chamber is also here. It features the roll call of regiments deployed to Gibraltar since the early eighteenth century. The ensigns of the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy are displayed. A monument commemorates British Regiments. The inscription reads: Dedicated To The Memory Of All Those Who Have Made The Supreme Sacrifice In Defence Of Gibraltar.

Princess Caroline’s Battery is listed with the Gibraltar Heritage Trust. The Gibraltar Tourist Board oversees the site. The day-to-day operation is licensed to a private company. This arrangement is similar to O’Hara’s Battery.

In 2011, Princess Caroline’s Battery was the theme of a painting contest. The Gibraltar Heritage Trust sponsored the event.

Princess Caroline’s Battery offers a glimpse into Gibraltar’s military history. It shows the strategic importance of this region over the centuries. The Military Heritage Centre brings this past to life. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in Gibraltar’s rich heritage.
