Who was Robert Eduard Loesener? This very Landsitz Robert E Loesener whispers his story. It stands as a silent testament to a remarkable life. Robert Eduard Loesener a Hamburg shipping magnate and businessman lived a life of adventure and enterprise. His family held considerable influence in Hamburg’s shipping world. His father Friedrich Leopold Loesener was a successful merchant. His mother Crisca Sloman was the daughter of the prominent shipowner Robert Miles Sloman.

This Landsitz Robert E Loesener however is not just about lineage and wealth. It reflects Loesener’s multifaceted life. He wasn’t just a businessman. He was a keen sportsman a dedicated yachtsman. He owned numerous yachts. He competed in national and international regattas. He even acquired the Vineta originally built for Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Beyond sailing Loesener’s entrepreneurial spirit extended far beyond the family shipping business. He participated in various ventures including the Deutsche Kohlen Depot GmbH. This company supplied German steamships in the Levant. He also was involved in group tours collaborating with the travel agency Carl Stangen in Hamburg. He even had a hand in the Selbstfahrerunion e V Germany’s first car rental company. The company eventually led to the formation of CITAG and then Europcar.

Loesener’s business dealings were marked by a constant rivalry with Albert Ballin and the HAPAG. He consistently involved the Godeffroy family in his endeavors. His achievements gained him recognition. He received the China Memorial Medal from Kaiser Wilhelm II. This was in recognition of his work in repatriating German troops from China in 1897. He was also awarded the Red Eagle Order fourth class in 1903.

Contemporary wealth guides listed Loesener among Hamburg’s leading financial and industrial elite. This was alongside figures like Erich Laeisz and Wilhelm Anton Riedemann. However his vast business empire eventually declined. This was largely due to the collapse of the so-called Fürstenkonzern or Fürstentrust led by Christian Kraft zu Hohenlohe-Öhringen and Max Egon II zu Fürstenberg.

After World War I Loesener retreated to the Katharinenhof on Fehmarn Island. He acquired this property in 1917. His passion for sailing continued. He shared it with his son in law Georg Wilhelm Schulz a U-boat commander during World War II. Loesener and his wife Elisabeth are buried in the Nienstedten Cemetery in Hamburg. Their gravestone features a relief inspired by Bertel Thorvaldsen’s famous statue from Copenhagen’s Vor Frue Kirke.
