Did you know Frankfurt’s Hauptfriedhof is more than just a burial ground? It is a sprawling historical landmark. We are standing before the Friedhofskapelle. It is a place for reflection within this vast space.
The Hauptfriedhof in Frankfurt am Main first opened on July 1, 1828. The city’s garden director, Sebastian Rinz, designed it. He used the then-popular English landscape park style. His design choice still impresses visitors today.
Initially, the cemetery covered 5.6 hectares. Over the years, expansions increased it to an impressive 70 hectares. These expansions allowed continuous growth and beautification.
The classicist Old Portal features Doric columns. It majestically stands in its surroundings. Friedrich Rumpf, a renowned Frankfurt master builder, created the arcade-like vault hall in 1828. It adds a timeless elegance to the Friedhofskapelle and the cemetery.
Many impressive trees grow in the historical cemetery area. Some reach up to 30 meters high. Combined with old monuments and curved paths, they create lush vegetation. This carefully maintained garden ensemble is protected. This blend of nature and architecture creates a melancholic romantic atmosphere. It captivates every visitor to the Friedhofskapelle.
The Hauptfriedhof is the final resting place for many famous people. These include philosopher Theodor W. Adorno and writer Ricarda Huch. Also interred here are philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and Alois Alzheimer. He was the namesake of Alzheimer’s disease. The Frankfurt dialect poet Friedrich Stoltze is buried here as well.
These figures give the cemetery added historical and cultural value. The Friedhofskapelle is part of a place of rest. It also stands as a vibrant monument to Frankfurt’s history.
The Hauptfriedhof offers various types of graves. There are earth selection graves and crypts. You can also find gardener-maintained graves. Urn graves include urn selection graves and urn chambers. There are lawn urn selection graves and gardener-maintained urn graves. Row graves include earth and urn row graves. Also available are lawn urn row graves and children’s earth row graves. A community grave site exists for non-burial-eligible individuals.
The Friedhofskapelle and the Hauptfriedhof are designed for accessibility. Toilets are available in the mourning hall and the mortuary. These are open during funeral services. A free cemetery taxi service helps elderly and mobility-impaired visitors. It operates on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Special trips run on holidays in spring, November, and December.
