Before you see massive, modern high schools like those in the Northeast ISD, you might be surprised to see the oldest high school in the Northside ISD, right here in front of you. This is Marshall High School. Built in 1949, this school was originally called Northside High School. In the fall of 1960, it was changed to John Marshall High School, in honor of the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall. It was a trend amongst the Northside ISD high schools to name them after judges of the Supreme Court. So as you can see, Marshall High School has a long history of academic excellence in the San Antonio area. The name change brought to the school a mascot that was picked by the students: the Ram. This choice was based on a similar mascot of the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL. Although there are newer high schools today, Marshall High School still has a significant impact on the San Antonio educational landscape.
