Chigang Pagoda Stabling Yard. A name that might not evoke images of grand adventures. Yet, beneath the bustling city of Guangzhou, this unassuming place holds a story of engineering marvels and neighborhood anxieties. Chigang Pagoda Stabling Yard sits quietly beneath Guangzhou’s vibrant streets. It serves as the beating heart of the Zhujiang New Town Automated People Mover System. This underground marvel is more than just a parking spot for trains. It is the control center, the nerve center orchestrating the smooth flow of the APM line. Constructed in two phases, the stabling yard has a fascinating history. The initial phase saw the completion of a space covering 3,036.9 square meters. The second phase, planned to encompass a larger area of 7,663.5 square meters, remains unrealized. Imagine the scale of this underground world, a hidden city beneath our feet. The construction of Chigang Pagoda Stabling Yard wasn’t without its drama. In February 2009, nearby residents voiced their concerns. They feared the excavation work might compromise the structural integrity of their buildings, leading to protests that temporarily halted the project. Months later, in April 2009, a section of the eastern wall of the excavation site collapsed, creating a sinkhole of about 10 square meters. This incident undoubtedly fueled the residents’ anxieties. Despite these setbacks, progress continued. On March 30, 2010, the first APM train arrived at Chigang Pagoda Stabling Yard, marking a significant milestone. The final two trains joined the fleet on April 20, 2011, completing the initial phase of the project. Today, Chigang Pagoda Stabling Yard silently performs its crucial role. It keeps the APM line running smoothly, a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance in the face of challenges. This underground world, hidden from everyday view, pulses with the rhythm of the city, a vital artery beneath the bustling streets of Guangzhou.
