Ready to explore the world of education? Cornelsen Verlag stands before us a cornerstone of German learning. It has shaped minds for generations.
Cornelsen Verlag started in post-war Berlin. Electrical engineer Franz Cornelsen founded it in 1946. He saw a need for educational materials. Germans were isolated during Nazi rule. They needed access to English and French literature.
Franz Cornelsen had no publishing experience. But he knew what made a good book. He had created an English-German dictionary while at Siemens. His wife Hildegard, an author, inspired him. They lived in an artist colony. There, they met writers who influenced Cornelsen’s vision.
In the beginning, space was tight. The Cornelsens’ living room became the office. Paper was scarce. Yet, Cornelsen persevered. His first book was Oscar Wilde’s “The Devoted Friend.” It quickly sold out.
“Peter Pim and Billy Ball” was a major success. This English textbook became an instant hit in 1948. Hildegard Cornelsen’s illustrations and Kurt Spangenberg’s pedagogy made it popular. It sold 35 million copies until 1981.
The Berlin Blockade in 1948 was a setback. Cornelsen was cut off from markets. Paper became scarce. Deliveries were delayed. The company faced financial crisis.
Cornelsen innovated to survive. In 1950, it launched Cornelsen-Bogen. These monthly supplements covered politics, science, and the economy. They sold millions of copies.
Franz Cornelsen visited American textbook publishers in 1953. He acquired Velhagen & Klasing in 1954. This publisher was known for its atlases. The acquisition expanded Cornelsen’s offerings.
Throughout the years, Cornelsen acquired other publishers. These included Hirschgraben, W. Girardet, and Schwann-Bagel. After reunification, Cornelsen took over Volk und Wissen. This was East Germany’s textbook publisher.
Cornelsen embraced digital media. It launched online platforms like scook and Duden Learnattack. These platforms offer interactive learning tools. They adapt to modern students’ needs.
Today, Cornelsen Verlag is part of the Cornelsen Group. The Franz Cornelsen Foundation owns the majority of shares. The company continues to innovate in education. It offers diverse learning materials. These include books, software, and online resources. Cornelsen helps shape the future of learning in Germany and beyond.
