Delve with me into the hushed grounds of Mount Feake Cemetery. Established in 1857 this historic cemetery offers a serene escape in Waltham Massachusetts. It is a place where artistry history and nature converge.

Mount Feake Cemetery got its name from the highest hill in Waltham. Governor John Winthrop named it in 1632 after Robert Feake. Feake later married Winthrop’s daughter. This cemetery is the city’s second after Grove Hill Cemetery. It is known as one of the best-preserved garden cemeteries in Massachusetts.

Robert Morris Copeland designed Mount Feake Cemetery. From the start people compared it to Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. The cemetery sits on rugged land above the Charles River. It faces the Waltham Watch Company complex. Winding lanes complement the terrain. They provide access to all parts of Mount Feake Cemetery.

Most grave markers are granite. Marble and limestone are also present. These stones whisper stories of lives lived. They reflect the craftsmanship of bygone eras. Wandering here offers quiet reflection.

Once there was a brick water pumping station adding romantic charm. Built in 1872 and enlarged in 1896 to stand on the grounds of the cemetery. The now-demolished pumping station provided a picturesque ruin. Adjacent were two Italianate houses. Also a carriage house and sheds linked to the pumping station.

Mount Feake Cemetery spans about 85 acres. Its tranquil atmosphere suits quiet activities. Walking jogging or simply personal reflection are common here. From certain spots one can view Francis Cabot Lowell’s textile mills. They still stand on Crescent Street near the Charles River.

Visiting Mount Feake Cemetery offers more than just a walk through history. The natural beauty evolves with the seasons. Vibrant colors appear in fall and blooming flowers in spring. Early morning or late afternoon visits provide peaceful experiences. The lighting is perfect for photographs.

Notable figures rest here. Their stories add depth to this already rich site. Marta Adams is among those interred. Take a guided tour. Learn about the historical significance of those buried.

Before you go check the visiting hours. The cemetery closes early in the evening. Whether paying respects enjoying a stroll or delving into local history. Mount Feake Cemetery offers an unforgettable experience. Its serene ambiance resonates with all who visit.
