Deep within the heart of Beijing, the Temple of Earth whispers tales of emperors and ancient rituals. The Temple of Earth isn’t just a historical site. It’s a portal to a time when emperors communed with the earth, praying for bountiful harvests and a prosperous nation. Built in 1530 during the Ming dynasty, the Temple of Earth served as the stage for elaborate summer solstice ceremonies. Emperors of both the Ming and Qing dynasties journeyed here to perform sacrifices to the God of Earth.

The Temple of Earth stands in stark contrast to its celestial counterpart, the Temple of Heaven. While the Temple of Heaven is circular, reflecting the shape of the heavens, the Temple of Earth is square, symbolizing the earth. This square motif is echoed throughout the temple’s design, from its walls to its altars. Its location in northern Beijing also aligns with ancient Chinese beliefs associating north with the earth. The Temple of Heaven sits in the south, completing the cosmic balance.

The heart of the Temple of Earth is the Fangze Altar, also known as the “square water altar.” This square platform, once surrounded by water, was where emperors presented their offerings. The temple complex extends along a north-south axis, encompassing five main structures: the Fangze Altar, the Imperial Respecting House, the Sacrifice Pavilion, the Fast Palace, and the Divine Warehouse. The largest structure is the Fangze platform, also called the Worship Platform, covering a vast 18,000 square meters.

Today, the Temple of Earth resides within Ditan Park, a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Beyond the historical structures, the park offers a vibrant atmosphere with activities like water calligraphy and a children’s play arcade. Joggers, runners, and Tai Chi practitioners find solace amidst the lush greenery and tree-lined paths. During the Lunar New Year, the park transforms into a spectacle of color and tradition with the annual temple fair. Thousands of red lanterns illuminate the trees, as crowds gather to enjoy cultural performances and sample local delicacies. Even amidst the modern city, the Temple of Earth continues to resonate with the echoes of ancient rituals and the enduring connection between humans and the earth.
