Established in 1999, Xiancun Street in Guangzhou has a modern history. But it’s built upon a foundation much older. The village of Xiancun itself dates back nearly 800 years. Xiancun Street sits in the heart of Guangzhou’s new central axis and the Zhujiang New Town district. It’s bordered by several major roads. These include Huacheng Avenue to the south, Guangyuan Road to the west, and Huangpi Avenue to the north. Xiancun Street encompasses an area of 4.07 square kilometers. In 2010, the population of Xiancun Street was recorded as over 92,000 people. This included over 75,000 permanent residents and nearly 18,000 temporary residents. Over 25,000 households called Xiancun Street home. As of 2020, the population had grown to over 58,000. Xiancun Street is more than just streets and buildings. It represents a blend of old and new, a place where a historic village has been absorbed into a modern metropolis. While much of the original village has been transformed, traces of its past remain, woven into the fabric of this vibrant community.
