Hidden within Higashiosaka, the Sengen Shrine whispers tales of centuries past. Right here at Sengen Shrine, time seems to slow down. The air hums with a sense of ancient reverence. The Sengen Shrine stands as a testament to the rich traditions of Kawauchi Plain. It is a place where the echoes of history intertwine with the vibrant pulse of modern life. Sengen Shrine’s story begins with the legendary Emperor Suinin. He is believed to have established the original Sengen Shrine, creating a sacred space amidst the fertile lands. Over time, the shrine became deeply connected to the agricultural rhythms of the community. It evolved into a focal point for celebrating the autumn harvest and praying for continued prosperity.

Today, the Sengen Shrine carries on this legacy. Each year, a special ritual unfolds, a tribute to the harvest and a prayer for longevity. The heart of this celebration is the brewing of sacred sake, a tradition passed down through generations. The process begins with the careful selection of 160 kilograms of locally grown rice. This rice, the first fruits of the harvest, is meticulously steamed and cooled. Then, it is carefully added to pure water drawn from the depths of Mount Ikoma. This mixture is then placed in large, stainless steel vats within the shrine’s designated brewing house. This building, a designated cultural asset of the city, stands as a tangible link to the shrine’s brewing heritage.

The brewing process, a meticulous two-week endeavor, is overseen by the current head of the household. This individual, known as the “Miyaji,” plays a crucial role in ensuring the sake’s purity and sacred essence. The resulting sake, about 500 liters, is offered to the deities during the autumn festival. It serves as a symbol of gratitude and a prayer for continued blessings. The remaining sake is shared amongst the community. It provides a taste of tradition and a tangible connection to the shrine’s enduring spirit. Sengen Shrine is more than just a place of worship. It is a living testament to the enduring power of tradition, a place where the past harmoniously coexists with the present. Sengen Shrine stands as a reminder of our connection to the land, the cycles of nature, and the importance of honoring the legacies that shape our lives.
