In the year 2000, dozens of commercial real estate projects sprung up in Chengdu, changing the city’s landscape. Lingxian, once a quiet township on the outskirts of this bustling metropolis, found itself caught in the current of change. The name itself, Lingxian, echoes Chengdu’s rich history, meaning “immortal fairy”. It’s a name that whispers of ancient legends and a connection to a past that stretches back millennia, to a time before Chengdu was even founded by the Qin in 316 BC. Lingxian witnessed the transformation of the Chengdu Plain into the “Land of Abundance,” thanks to the ingenious Dujiangyan Irrigation System built by Li Bing around 256 BC. This engineering marvel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tamed the once-destructive Min River and ensured the prosperity of Chengdu and its surrounding areas. Imagine Lingxian’s fields, once regularly flooded, now consistently yielding bountiful harvests, contributing to Chengdu’s reputation as a culinary paradise. This agricultural abundance fuelled Chengdu’s cultural growth, attracting poets like Du Fu, who sought refuge in the city during the tumultuous An Lushan Rebellion. Perhaps, from his thatched cottage, Du Fu gazed towards Lingxian, finding inspiration in its peaceful landscape. Lingxian, though a suburb, would have felt the ripple effects of Zhang Xianzhong’s brief but devastating reign in the 17th century, a dark chapter in Chengdu’s history. Yet, like Chengdu itself, Lingxian persevered. Even into the 20th century, Lingxian remained a witness to history. It saw Chengdu’s rise as an economic powerhouse, from the early adoption of paper money in the Song Dynasty to its modern status as a major center for industries like machinery, automobiles, and information technology. The steady flow of progress, much like the waters controlled by the Dujiangyan, continued to shape Lingxian. As Chengdu embraced the 21st century, so too did Lingxian, though its identity as a separate township eventually faded. In December 2019, Lingxian Township was formally absorbed into the expanding Yangma Subdistrict, becoming a part of Chengdu’s ever-evolving urban fabric. Its name, however, remains a reminder of the rich tapestry of history woven into the very fabric of this land.
