Deep within the City Botanic Gardens, a family stands frozen in time. This is the “Building Blocks of Life,” a towering sandstone sculpture. It captures a poignant moment of familial love and protection. The “Building Blocks of Life” was created by Dutch-born sculptor Antone Bruinsma. It was gifted to the gardens in 1988. Standing over 2.4 meters tall, the sculpture depicts a traditional family unit. The father stands protectively, sheltering his wife and two children beneath his large hand. The mother holds the youngest child close. The older child looks outward with curiosity. Bruinsma’s work often reflects his deep connection to Queensland. He draws inspiration from Mother Earth and her gifts. This is evident in the “Building Blocks of Life.” The sculpture resonates with the gardens’ family-friendly atmosphere. The family, the fundamental unit of life, is perfectly placed amidst the natural beauty of the gardens. It serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of connection and nurturing. Bruinsma, a Queensland College of Art graduate, actively contributed to the Warana Festival. This later evolved into the Brisbane Festival. His works are scattered throughout Brisbane and the surrounding areas. His artistic contributions have truly enriched the region. If you’re ever in the Gold Coast hinterland, I highly recommend visiting his sculpture park at Cedar Creek. It’s a testament to his enduring passion and talent.
