Picture the grandeur. Before you stands the Brooks Estate a remarkable piece of Medford Massachusetts history. For almost four centuries this land has witnessed the rise and fall of families the changing tides of American life.

The Brooks family a prominent Medford clan first acquired 400 acres in 1660. They were farmers and soldiers. Some even owned slaves. Generations later Peter Chardon Brooks III and Shepherd Brooks transformed the land into a summer retreat. Peter’s Point of Rocks mansion alas no longer stands. But Shepherd’s magnificent manor house built in 1880 remains a testament to the era. Designed by Peabody and Stearns its Queen Anne style is breathtaking.

Shepherd’s manor and carriage house are architectural masterpieces. They stand as a reminder of a bygone era of elegance and wealth. This red brick structure with its complex roofline and porte-cochère welcomes visitors. The extensive grounds a haven for migrating birds and small mammals invite exploration. Imagine the Brooks family enjoying picnics on these very grounds.

The estate’s history isn’t always idyllic. After Shepherd’s wife Clara passed away in 1939 the city of Medford acquired the remaining 80 acres. It served as housing for veterans then as a nursing home. For a time even a group home for adults with mental challenges occupied the manor.

In the 1990s a citizen-led group the Brooks Estate Preservation Association fought to save it. Their efforts culminated in a 1998 conservation plan. This protected 50 acres the manor and carriage house from development. Today the Medford-Brooks Estate Land Trust M-BELT carefully preserves and restores this precious piece of history.

Wander the trails explore Brooks Pond. Feel the weight of history under your feet. The Brooks Estate stands as a symbol of perseverance a reminder that even in the face of change some things are worth preserving. A true urban oasis beckoning you to explore its beauty and discover its stories.
