What if faith could build a community? Highland Church stands as a testament to that very idea. This church is located at 16020 Highland Avenue in Jamaica New York. Highland Church has a rich history and a vibrant present.
Highland Church was constituted on June 8 1964. It began as Highland Avenue Baptist Church. 63 charter members formed the church. Highland had the distinction of being the first church in the Metropolitan New York Baptist Association. It had a mission at the time of its establishment. The church spent its first two and a half years acquiring a building and parsonage. After a long search they purchased their building on the hill.
In January 1967 Reverend James S Wright became pastor. The Home Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention appointed him. This was a challenging time. Pastor Wright and the church became open to the Spirit-filled life. Highland entered the Charismatic Movement. It was an interdenominational Christian renewal movement. The movement focused on following the Holy Spirit. It also focused on the use of spiritual gifts. After a period of little activity Highland was refreshed. It embraced the message of reconciliation. This opened the door to new changes and cultures.
Highland began a dramatic transformation. Many members with strong Baptist traditions were lost. The church attracted people comfortable in a nondenominational setting. This setting was rooted in the Word. It also had the freedom of worship and spiritual experience.
In the mid-eighties Pastor Subash was led to Highland. He became Pastor Wright’s successor in 1992 after his passing. Highland has become a very diverse community. It includes people of all ages from all around the world. Praise and worship are lively and full of rhythm. The building is a second home to many. Highland continues to uphold the values and vision received over 50 years ago.
“The Spirit Anointing the Word” is Highland’s motto. It is their foundation. They apply it to their mission of “making disciples of all nations.” Highland is focused on making a positive impact on the community. They aim to create a citywide family center. Families and individuals can grow in faith there. They can also discover God’s plan for their lives. Highland’s goal is to see authentic believers. They want to witness a city transformed. This transformation would come through the gospel. People would come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. This goal was is and will always be their vision.
