Perched high on this ridge, do you feel the gentle breeze? This is Eastern Heights. It is a suburb in Ipswich. Eastern Heights offers a blend of history and community.

The name Eastern Heights reflects its location. It sits on a high ridge. This ridge is on the eastern side of Ipswich CBD. The name officially appeared on a map in 1930. But its story began long before.

In the late 19th century, Eastern Heights became known for grand houses. Wealthy residents chose this area. They built impressive homes on large plots of land. Even today, Eastern Heights maintains its residential charm. The Newtown-Grange-Eastern Heights area is mainly for homes, parks, and schools.

Let’s talk about some key locations. Cintra Street boasts views of the northern hills. Chermside and Whitehill Roads were highly desirable addresses. “Fairy Knoll” at 2A Robertson Road and “Garowie” at 59 Whitehill Road are special. “Garowie” sits atop Limestone Ridge. Salisbury Road, near Limestone Park, features early 20th-century houses. These homes have well-landscaped gardens.

“Fairy Knoll” and “Garowie” are heritage-listed mansions. “Garowie” was built in 1888. “Fairy Knoll” followed in 1901. These two-story houses showcase the area’s rich history.

Eastern Heights has seen changes over the years. The Newtown State School opened in 1882. Later, parts of the old school building were sold. One section went to Redbank Plains State School. Another became property of a boot repairer in East Street. Many Ipswich buildings have similar stories of migration.

Eastern Heights has a Catholic Church. It is called Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. Bishop Patrick O’Donnell opened it in 1962. Archbishop James Duhig was present. St Peter’s Anglican Church was dedicated in 1977. However, it closed around 2009.

Eastern Heights offers several amenities. Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church is on Robertson Road. Jim Donald Memorial Park is for soccer fans. There is also Hancock Park. A Scout Hall provides space for community activities.

Eastern Heights had a population of 3,631 in 2021. This shows a vibrant community. It is a bit less than the 3,709 people in 2016.

Eastern Heights doesn’t have its own school. But Ipswich Central State School, Silkstone State School, and Raceview State School are nearby. Bremer State High School is also close.

So, as we stand here in Eastern Heights, we see a suburb with a rich past. It is a place of grand homes and community spirit. It is a suburb that offers a glimpse into Ipswich’s history. The high ridge provides not only a view, but a sense of place. A place with stories etched into its very foundations.
