What secrets do those majestic towers hold? The Beresford, rising before us on Central Park West, whispers tales of luxury and resilience. The Beresford opened its doors in 1929, a mere month before the Wall Street Crash. Designed by Emery Roth, this architectural marvel boasts three iconic octagonal towers. These towers, capped with copper and glass lanterns, weren’t just aesthetic flourishes. Two concealed water towers, essential for the building’s function. The Beresford, a 22-story giant, offered opulent living. Imagine stepping into one of its original 178 apartments. Many were duplexes, echoing the layout of grand townhouses. Public spaces like living rooms and kitchens graced the lower levels, while private quarters resided above, connected by elegant iron and brass staircases. The Beresford was designed with resident privacy in mind. Three separate lobbies, each with its own elevators and stairs, minimized shared hallways and fostered an exclusive ambiance. The lobbies themselves are works of art. Terrazzo and marble floors gleam beneath crystal chandeliers. Walls boast intricate marble pilasters and art glass windows overlooking a tranquil courtyard. Elevators, eleven in total, served a maximum of two apartments per floor. Some even opened directly into private foyers, a testament to the Beresford’s commitment to discreet luxury. Despite its grand opening coinciding with the financial turmoil of 1929, The Beresford persevered. It became a symbol of endurance, a fortress against the storm. It weathered the Depression, ownership changes, and finally converted to a co-op in 1962. Today, The Beresford continues to attract a constellation of notable residents, from actors and musicians to business tycoons. Its enduring allure is a testament to Emery Roth’s vision and The Beresford’s unwavering spirit.
