Have you ever wondered what secrets lie beneath Charleston’s streets? The Mace Brown Museum of Natural History holds some of those secrets. Right here on the campus of the College of Charleston you’ll find this remarkable museum. It’s home to over 30000 fossils many from South Carolina’s Lowcountry. The Mace Brown Museum isn’t just a collection of old bones. It’s a journey through time. A journey that begins billions of years ago.

The Mace Brown Museum of Natural History opened in 2010. It was the generous gift of Mace Brown himself. He donated his extensive private collection. The College of Charleston built a space for it in their new science building. The museum’s focus is the paleontology of the South Carolina Lowcountry. You can see fossils of early baleen whales dolphins and sea cows. The museum even has holotype specimens of Coronodon Cotylocara and Inermorostrum. These are unique fossils found nowhere else.

But the Mace Brown Museum’s treasures go beyond just these incredible specimens. It boasts a 3.49 billion-year-old microbial mat. This is one of the oldest things you’ll ever see in a museum. It’s a window into the earliest life on Earth. The museum also features a chronological display. It starts with the oldest specimens and progresses to the more recent ones. Imagine holding a piece of history that old.

One of the most captivating displays focuses on the evolution of whales. You’ll trace the transformation from land mammals to the ocean giants we know today. You will learn about the evolution of baleen echolocation flippers and the migration of the nose into the blowhole. This is a truly remarkable story. All four holotype specimens (Cotylocara Coronodon Inermorostrum and Stegosiren) are part of this Oligocene collection.

Beyond the whales you’ll find a diverse collection of fossils. There are Pleistocene land mammals from the southeastern USA. You’ll also see Cretaceous mosasaurs fossil mammals and turtles. There are even exhibits on trackways mammoths mastodons fossil preservation and more. The museum regularly adds to its collections. Recently they added casts of Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex skulls including a cast of “Scotty” the largest T Rex ever discovered. A new exhibit highlights dinosaur tracks and trackways from around the world.

The Mace Brown Museum isn’t just a museum. It’s a living testament to Charleston’s rich natural history. It’s a place where students conduct research and amateur collectors share their discoveries. It is a free museum so everyone can appreciate the wonders within. So take your time explore the exhibits. You might just discover something truly extraordinary. This hidden gem will stay with you long after your visit ends.
