Have you noticed the elegant arch before you? It is the Jade Belt Bridge. This bridge stands gracefully in Beijing’s Summer Palace. Let me tell you about this special bridge. It is more than just a way to cross the water. It is a symbol of imperial history and artistic design.

The Jade Belt Bridge is also known as the Camel’s Back Bridge. It is an 18th-century pedestrian bridge. The bridge is famous for its tall, thin single arch. The Jade Belt Bridge is the most famous of six bridges on Kunming Lake’s western shore.

The Qianlong Emperor ordered its construction around 1750. He wanted it to resemble delicate bridges from southern China. The Jade Belt Bridge is made of marble and other white stone. The railings feature carvings of cranes and other animals.

But why such a high arch? The arch’s height allowed the Qianlong Emperor’s dragon boat to pass underneath. Emperors and empresses would use this route on special occasions. They sailed their dragon boat under the Jade Belt Bridge. It became one of the Summer Palace’s most beautiful sights.

Interestingly a similar bridge exists. The Xiuyi Bridge is another arch bridge. It is southeast of the Summer Palace.

Centuries later a scholar discovered something amazing. Wang Chaosheng found degraded writing on a stele. He believed it was a poem by the Qianlong Emperor from 1755. The poem referenced the Jade Belt Bridge. It connected it to the Gardens of Clear Ripples.

The poem reads: “To the west of Jade Belt Bridge – the Pictures of Tilling and Weaving.” It speaks of farmers and weavers. It highlights their shared diligence. It notes similarities between north and south. It emphasizes their common source of food and clothing.

Imagine the emperor pausing here. He admires the bridge. He reflects on his empire. He thinks about the lives of his people. The Jade Belt Bridge is more than stone. It embodies history, art, and imperial ambition. Take a moment to appreciate the Jade Belt Bridge. It links us to China’s rich past.
