Twenty years ago this was not a marsh. Imagine a barren landscape. This was the Model Marsh site before its rebirth. It had been a salt marsh once. Then human activities and natural sedimentation changed it. Tidal flow decreased. The system degraded.

The Model Marsh is a testament to restoration. It’s part of the larger Friendship Marsh a 500-acre area dedicated in 2000. The project aimed to recreate the natural habitat. They excavated artificial tidal creeks. They replanted native plants.

The goal was to mimic a natural system. They planted Pacific cordgrass. They added kelp soil amendments. Saltwort was planted too. Pickleweed appeared naturally. Glasswort thrived. It had nearly 100% survival. The kelp helped improve the soil’s properties aiding re-vegetation.

Early on sediment deposition was a problem. The creek mouths filled up. Small channels formed. It seemed like the original morphology would return. But the upper creeks changed little. Sediment built up more in the mudflats. After five years the creeks didn’t reach their restoration targets. The project faced challenges. Despite these difficulties Model Marsh exists. It stands as a reminder of the dedication involved. It is a success.

The Model Marsh is a living example of ecological restoration. It demonstrates the resilience of nature. It showcases the efforts made to restore a vital part of San Diego’s ecosystem. It is a place of scientific study. It is a haven for wildlife. This quiet marsh offers a glimpse of what can be achieved through dedicated restoration efforts. Its story continues to unfold as nature reclaims its space. The Model Marsh is a symbol of hope for environmental recovery.
