What does it mean to name a square after a person? It means we choose to remember them. Here in Brussels we stand at Square Salvador Allende. This space commemorates a figure whose life and death continue to resonate deeply.

Square Salvador Allende bears the name of Salvador Allende. He was the 28th President of Chile. Allende served from 1970 until his death in 1973. As a socialist he committed to democracy. He has been described as the first Marxist to be elected president in a liberal democracy in Latin America.

Allende’s story is one of hope and tragedy. Born in 1908 he rose through Chilean politics. He served as senator deputy and cabinet minister. In 1970 he won the presidency. He did this as the candidate of the Popular Unity coalition.

As president Allende sought to nationalize major industries. He worked to expand education. He aimed to improve living standards. These goals put him at odds with right-wing parties. These parties controlled Congress.

The circumstances surrounding Allende’s death remain disputed. On September 11 1973 a military coup ousted him. Troops surrounded La Moneda Palace. Allende gave his last speech. He vowed not to resign. Later that day Allende died. He died by suicide in his office.

Following Allende’s death General Augusto Pinochet refused to return authority to a civilian government. Chile was later ruled by the Government Junta. The military junta dissolved Congress. It suspended the Constitution of 1925. The junta initiated a program of persecuting alleged dissidents.

Belgium has a strong connection to this history. After the coup thousands of Chileans fled. Belgium became a safe haven for many. The Comite National Chili helped bring refugees to Belgium. The country was exemplary in taking in thousands who fled the Pinochet dictatorship. It is estimated that Belgium gave shelter to at least 8000 Chileans during Pinochet’s rule.

Today this square reminds us of Allende’s ideals. It reminds us of democracy social justice and international solidarity. The commemorations and mobilizations here remind people of the Popular Unity led by Allende. It recalls how the West used every means possible to destroy this ideal.

As you reflect on this square remember Salvador Allende’s words. “Keep in mind that much sooner than later the great avenues will again be opened through which will pass free men to construct a better society.” Square Salvador Allende stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. It stands as a call to continue the fight for a fairer world.
