Whispers of the past echo through the grand arches of Biserica Sfânta Treime. This magnificent church stands proudly at the intersection of Calea 13 Septembrie and Sebastian Street in Bucharest. Biserica Sfânta Treime isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of the community it serves. Originally, a small church stood on this spot. Its first documented record dates back to 1820. This earlier church was built by Necula Bacânu and other merchants. They used land granted by Radu Vodă Monastery, which owned the entire village of Lupești at that time. The area was called Lupești then. The church carried the name “Lupești” for decades before becoming known as Biserica “Ghencea” around 1853. Interestingly, even without a known founder named “Ghencea”, the name stuck to the church and eventually the whole district. Biserica Sfânta Treime as we see it today was envisioned even before World War I. Ștefan Ionescu-Troicea, the primary donor, initiated plans for a larger church. However, the war and its difficult aftermath delayed construction. After Ionescu-Troicea’s death in 1925, the cornerstone was finally laid in 1927. Construction lasted until 1934, funded by the initial donation and supplemented by parishioners’ contributions. Architects Virginia Andreescu Haret and Jean Pompilian designed the monumental Neo-Romanian style structure. It was consecrated on November 11, 1934, by Patriarch Miron Cristea, even before its interior was painted. The church’s original frescoes, created between 1941 and 1948 by professors Gheorghe (Ghiță) Popescu and Nuni Dona, are considered masterpieces of Neo-Byzantine art. Biserica Sfânta Treime has undergone several renovations. Repairs to the copper roof were made in 1969. After the 1977 earthquake, interior and exterior plaster and paintwork were restored. Between 1978 and 1981, painter Iosif Kleber, followed by Alexandru Bucescu and Aurel Tabacu, meticulously restored the interior frescoes. More extensive renovations, including tower consolidation and roof replacement, took place between 2007 and 2010 under the leadership of Priest Ion Grădincea. The interior paintings were also restored. The church was re-consecrated on June 24, 2013. Today, Biserica Sfânta Treime is one of Bucharest’s largest churches. It measures 40 by 16 by 23 meters, featuring a triconic plan with a porch, vestibule, narthex, nave with lateral apses, and three octagonal towers. As you admire Biserica Sfânta Treime, remember its journey through time. It symbolizes not only spiritual devotion but also the collective efforts of a community to preserve its heritage.
