How many lives has Cascina Rossa touched? Nestled in the Citta Studi neighborhood of Milan, Cascina Rossa isn’t just a historical building. It’s a testament to the city’s evolving spirit. Imagine, if you will, Milan in the 16th century. Cascina Rossa already stood, a testament to bygone eras. In the following century, it became a bustling farm under the ownership of the Rosales family, Spanish immigrants who gave the “Rossa” its name. As Milan transformed, so did Cascina Rossa. The urban sprawl eventually led to its abandonment. By the 1980s, it became part of Milan’s communal heritage. Fate, however, had other plans. In the late 1990s, the remnants of Cascina Rossa found new purpose. The Istituto dei Tumori and the Universita Statale began its revitalization. What was once a forgotten relic was reborn as a beacon of hope and healing. Part of its land transformed into the Orto Botanico, a tranquil oasis in the city. A modern glass structure arose, dedicated to cutting-edge research. The old stable, meticulously restored, became a center for a different kind of nourishment. Here, under the guidance of Professor Franco Berrino, the concept of “healthy food” took center stage. The old stable, with its high vaulted ceilings, was reimagined. A spacious kitchen with a view, tables set for learning and sharing – this became the heart of Cascina Rossa’s new life. Salute Donna, a tireless advocate for women’s health, played a crucial role, contributing to the design and equipping the industrial kitchen. They understood that food, prepared with care and knowledge, could be a powerful ally in the fight against cancer. And so, in 2005, Cascina Rossa opened its doors, not just as a research facility, but as a place where the aroma of hope and resilience mingled with the scent of fresh herbs from the synergic garden. This garden, lovingly tended by volunteers, is a testament to nature’s healing power. Cascina Rossa stands today, a symbol of Milan’s enduring spirit, a place where history, science and compassion intertwine.
