That striking pink facade. Doesn’t it beckon you? Welcome to Nhà thờ Tân Định a true Saigon treasure.
This isn’t just any church. Nhà thờ Tân Định boasts a rich history stretching back to 1874. Father Donatien Éveillard a tireless missionary spearheaded its construction. He poured his heart and soul into this project. It was completed in December 1876. A remarkable feat considering the resources available then.
The original structure however was quite modest. It paled in comparison to the majestic building we see today. Father Éveillard also established an orphanage and a boarding school. This Sainte Enfance de Tan-Dinh provided education to around 300 children by the 1880s. He even started a publishing house. The Imprimerie de la Mission trained underprivileged children. They learned valuable publishing skills. Father Éveillard’s legacy extends far beyond the church walls. He’s buried within the church itself. His tombstone a testament to his devotion.
By the 1890s the buildings needed an upgrade. Father Louis-Eugène Louvet Éveillard’s successor organized a lottery. This innovative fundraising effort secured the funds. This reconstruction in 1896-1898 transformed the church significantly. It included a school for deaf and mute children. This shows the church’s deep commitment to the community.
The current structure a marvel of Romanesque architecture blends Gothic and Renaissance influences. Note the two apsidal chapels flanking the entrance. One dedicated to Mary and Joseph the other to St Theresa. The beautiful statues and the Stations of the Cross date back to the 1890s.
In 1928-1929 the church underwent another renovation. Father Jean-Baptiste Nguyễn Bá Tống oversaw this significant expansion. The striking octagonal tower with its six bells was added. The Italian marble high altar and side altars are breathtaking. This enhancement is thanks to Françcois Haasz and his wife Anne Tống Thị Mức.
The distinctive pink hue we admire today appeared in 1957. It’s more than just paint. It reflects a period of renewal and rejuvenation.
Nhà thờ Tân Định is more than a pretty building. It stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and community spirit. It’s a place of worship a historical landmark and a vibrant part of Saigon’s cultural fabric. Soak in its beauty. Reflect on its history. It’s a story worth remembering.
