From the shimmering expanse of Lake Saint-Louis, you can almost hear the echoes of history. Lake Saint-Louis sits at the meeting point of the mighty Saint Lawrence and Ottawa rivers. It’s a key part of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, a vital waterway for trade and travel. Lake Saint-Louis isn’t just a body of water. It’s a place where history has unfolded, a place of natural beauty, and a hub of activity. This widening of the St. Lawrence River, cradled within the Hochelaga Archipelago, is fed by several sources. These include not only the Ottawa River flowing in from the Lake of Two Mountains, but also the Beauharnois Canal, the Soulanges Canal, the Saint-Louis River, and the Châteauguay River. Lake Saint-Louis is framed by the Island of Montreal to the north and east, and by the regions of Beauharnois-Salaberry, Roussillon, and Vaudreuil-Soulanges. To the south lies the town of Beauharnois, marked by its significant power-dam and canal. The western shores of Lake Saint-Louis boast a mix of private residences interspersed with parks and vibrant clubs. You might spot the Pointe-Claire Canoe Club or the Pointe-Claire Yacht Club bustling with activity. Islands dot the lake’s surface, including Dorval and Dowker Islands. Interestingly, Lake Saint-Louis is one of a trio of fluvial lakes along the St. Lawrence River. Upstream, you’ll find Lake Saint Francis, and downstream lies Lake Saint Pierre. The lake’s flow averages an impressive 8,400 cubic meters per second. The waters of Lake Saint-Louis teem with life, including the familiar yellow perch. The lake’s very name carries a story. Samuel Champlain’s 1611 map identifies this body of water. That same year, Champlain recorded the drowning of a young man named Louys in the nearby Lachine Rapids. Later accounts suggest that both the rapids and the lake were named in his memory. Even a Jesuit account from 1656 mentions crossing “Lac Saint Louys.” Lake Saint-Louis continues to be a vital part of the landscape, though modern challenges exist. Reports from 2014 highlighted issues like fecal coliform entering the lake from a Beaconsfield creek and PCBs from a Pointe-Claire industrial site. As you gaze across Lake Saint-Louis today, you’re not just seeing water. You’re seeing a place shaped by nature, history, and human interaction, a place with stories waiting to be discovered.
