Silence whispers tales here at the Madras War Cemetery. This tranquil space honors those who served during two World Wars. It serves as a reminder of lives lost and sacrifices made.

Madras War Cemetery was created in 1952. Its purpose was to consolidate graves. These graves came from civil and cantonment cemeteries. The cemeteries were located in southern and eastern India. Maintaining these graves permanently was becoming difficult. The Imperial War Graves Commission, now the Commonwealth War Graves Commission or CWGC, established the cemetery.

This cemetery occupies 2.75 acres. It holds the graves of 856 Commonwealth service people. These individuals died in the Second World War. The Defence Ministry granted a perpetual lease to the CWGC. The CWGC maintains the cemetery with the Government of India.

The Madras 1914-1918 War Memorial stands at the rear of the Madras War Cemetery. This memorial commemorates over 1,000 servicemen. They died in India during the First World War. Their remains rest in civil and cantonment cemeteries. Maintaining these graves in perpetuity became impossible after India’s independence in 1947. The memorial bears plaques. These plaques list the names of British and Commonwealth soldiers. The inscription reads: “Their name liveth for evermore”. Among those commemorated are 14 Australians and 5 New Zealanders.

Walking through the Madras War Cemetery, you will notice the meticulous care. Lawns stretch between the tombstones. Each stone bears a name, rank, and date of death. These markers tell silent stories of distant homes and interrupted lives.

Consider the Stone of Remembrance. It carries the inscription “Their Name Liveth For Evermore”. The Cross of Sacrifice stands as a universal symbol. It represents CWGC cemeteries worldwide.

Imagine the journeys that brought these individuals to India. Picture their lives. Think of their contributions to the war effort. Doctors, nurses, and support staff rest here too. Their sacrifices were no less significant.

Today, the Madras War Cemetery is open to the public. You can visit it daily between 8 AM and 6 PM. No entry fee is required. The cemetery stands on Mount-Poonamallee Road, Nandambakkam. It is about 5 kilometers from the airport. It’s also only 1 kilometer from St. Thomas Mount.

Take a moment to reflect. Consider the cost of war. Remember the human stories behind each grave. The Madras War Cemetery serves as a peaceful sanctuary. It honors the past.
